Do you know which film gave a huge boost to tourism in Rajasthan post-1974? You guessed it right: SONAR KELLA.
The 12th century fortress in Jaisalmer, made by Jado Bhati Rajputs from yellow limestone, was the backdrop of this first-ever Felu film about a six-year old boy(Mukul)remembering his past life (he claimed to have been in born within the ramparts of a Sonar Kella, that is Golden Fortress), a parapsychologist (Dr. Hemangomohan Hajra) who decides to take him to Rajasthan because he correctly assumes that a fortress located within desert surroundings can only be in that part of the country, the boy's abduction by two scoundrels (one of whom pose as Dr. Hajra, sorry, Dr. Hazra, and the other as a globetrotter), and Mukul's ultimate rescue by Feluda who was sent on hot pursuit by the boy's father.
The two main group of tourists in Rajastan are foreigners and Bengalis. The Bengali tourists can be found mostly in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer, the three places where the film unfolded. The Nahargadh fort in Jaipur, the Mehrangadh fort in Jodhpur, and the Golden Fortress in Jaisalmer are must-see for all Bengalis who visit Rajasthan. Personally, I have been to these three places twice, once in 1988 and and then in 2004. If you are an ardent Ray fan, it is incumbent on you to make such a visit at least once in your lifetime. You will feel the sacred and glorious presence of the great Master around you once you are there. I can vouch for that.
P.S.: As a tribute to the great Master's contribution to Rajasthan tourism, the State Government has decided to name a road in Jaisalmer after Him, and a proposal to erect His statue there has also been ratified by the State Assembly.
