Babuda's Feluda

Babuda's Feluda

When Santosh Dutta died, Satyajit Ray had said that he would not make Felu films anymore as no one else would be able to portray Jatayu as convincingly as he did. Surprisingly, Ray Sr. allowed Dr. Mohan Agashe to play the role in a Hindi TV series named KISSA KATHMANDU KA (based on his Feluda thriller JOTO KANDO KATHMANDUTEY and directed by son Sandip). Apparently, the younger Ray did not agree with his father’s opinion that Santosh Dutta was irreplaceable, as he experimented with other actors to play Jatayu. Incidentally, two (Robi Ghosh and Anup Kumar) of those who appeared on screen as Jatayu in the Felu films made after Ray Sr. himself passed away in 1992, died one after another. Comparisons with the “original” Jatayu were inevitable and unavoidable, and none could replace the image of Jatayu that Santosh Dutta had imprinted on the public mind. With the casting of Bibhu Bhattacharya, Sandip Ray has reverted to the bald-pated look of Jatayu, something that he had repudiated when he chose Robi Ghosh and Anup Kumar for the role. As far as Bhattacharya’s resemblance with the original is concerned, the similarity ends with the bald head.

On second thought, though, it is useless regretting that “other” actors have played Jatayu after the deaths of Santosh Dutta and Ray Sr. By the time Sandip Ray had started making Felu films, an old Santosh Dutta would have needed a replacement anyway. Just as an aging Soumitro had to make way for a much younger Sabyasachi Chakraborty to play Feluda.

Sabyasachi made his debut as Feluda in BAKSHO ROHOSSO and went on to portray the ace detective in the rest of the thrillers filmed as part of the same series made in 1996 to commemorate the thirty years of Feluda’s publication. He stayed on when Ray Jr. shifted Feluda to the big screen (BOMBAIYER BOMBETEY, KOILASHEY KELENKARI, and TINTORETTO-R JISHU). But Sabyasachi was not the first “other” actor to play Feluda. It was during the lifetime of Ray Sr. that a plump and aging Shashi Kapoor had enacted the role. Incidentally, the last time people saw Soumitro as Feluda was in a Bengali TV series directed by Bibhas Chakraborty. But viewers should not lose heart: only three actors had appeared on screen as Feluda (Soumitro, Shashi, and Sabyasachi). Whereas five actors have got to play Jatayu, and another five (Siddhartha Chatterjee, Alankar, Indranil Haldar, Saswato Chatterjee, and Parambrata Chattejee) have played Topshe till date.

Do you think Satyajit will make any more films in the future?
