Satyajit Ray - The giant of World cinema
========================
By :- Sanjit Banerjee

Ray - the giant of world cinema was a giant in every sense of the word. Standing at 6'4", Ray towered over his unit. His brooding personality and unmatched presence of mind gave him an edge to explore the different facets of film-making.

Right from directing a film to setting its music score, he did everything. The great movie director Akira Kurasawa said that not watching a Ray film is like living on this earth without seeing the sun and the moon.

Time and again, Ray was criticised for exploiting rural India, especially Bengal, through his films. But he reacted by saying that he showed the real face of rural India without any political undertones. He explored cinema as a medium to express his viewpoint. He enjoyed picking non-actors for many of his characters. He was a renaissance man who spent his time writing, painting, composing music and expressing his viewpoint in a language that the common man understood.

Today, Ray's films are part of syllabus in all film training institutes. Ray and his movies have grown to present a different school of learning for film-making. The Oscar for lifetime achievement was a deserving epithet for this director.

(P.S.- Satyajit Ray's first film "Pather Panchali" completed 50 years this year. The film was re-released in many western countries and in Kolkata to mark its golden jubilee.This article is my tribute to the Master for enriching the cine medium with his talent. I sincerely believe that "Pather Panchali" and many other Ray classics will always remain unique for film buffs.)
