Great site

:D It’s the best web site I have seen about any filmmaker. Keep up the good work. Comments about Satyajit Ray’s films are very thoughtful.

Could we have more information about Ray's literary work on the site?

Cinema on Ray's short stories

Postby Ayan Nandy on Fri Jan 09, 2004 7:15 am

I don't know if any filmmaker will come forward to film the wonderful short stories of Ray. We have seen quite a few Feluda films. Other short stories by Ray deserve attention to the filmmakers, though they will be really challenging.

For a low budget nice movie, I will suggest a cluster of two stories, "Barin Bhowmick-er Byaram" and "Batikbabu". You can shoot both of them in a trip to Darjeeling from Kolkata. In a 2-tier AC compartment of a train to NJP you can shoot "Barin Bhowmick-er byaram" (some flashbacks in the Race course, Kolkata). "Batikbabu" can be shot in Darjeeling, mostly in Jalpahar road. "Batikbabu" may need a single shot in Germany, but I thing it can be shot at Tolly Golf Course or some such place in India only.

If the director is looking for something challenging, she/he can plunge into a project on filming "Brihadchanchu". He needs to browse through few issues of NAtional Geographic to get the right bird and then spend some money to film it there. Maybe some good NG photographer can be asked for tips and the rest can be done by our star photographers. But it would be a real good job if someone can do it. "Brihadchanchu" can be clubbed with "Bankubabur Bandhu", the concept which was probably stolen by a world renown filmmaker to make a blockbluster Hollywood movie.

IS there any film maker in Bengal ready to take up the challenge? Or, to meet the demand of the viewers?

Films on Ray Short Stories

Postby Arindam Mukherjee on Sat Jul 14, 2007 12:42 am

Are they available for anyone to work on ? It would seem that either they are not, or maybe they are too expensive or everyone else is a fool since if the first two do not apply then we could mitigate the tons of crap being produced in Bengali cinema -- some of that could be corrected if they could just use Ray short stories as material.

I guess if we are niot ( going purely by statistical evidence) going to get those films let us try getting scripts across on this site. That should be legal. We could at least see film treatments on paper right here on this site.

So if anyone has interest etc. go ahead -- write a script and post it here. Sooner or later the film fraternity will get to know of their existence. We will know for sure if these are stories available for anyone to film and at an affordable price.
